Flashing Under Cedar Siding

Use a felt paper spline wrapped around the corner and extending 6 inches beyond the corner board to protect the joints where the siding meets the corner boards see figure 1 5 at left.

If the sidewall is stucco or solid wood like ours and you can t open it to get flashing behind it continue the step flashing to the peak of the roof then cover the step flashing with cap flashing photo 2. If the shingle already has flashing on it the kickout flashing has to slip beneath it and you ll have to loosen or remove siding to do this. The objective of flashing around doors windows and other junctures is to keep water flowing down and out to the surface of the wall. It is always recommended to install step flashing behind stucco dryvit wood panel lap siding vinyl siding cedar shingle siding etc.

Improper flashing and excessive caulking can force and trap water in the wall. Failing to replace step flashings when a cedar shake roof is replaced with a composition shingle roof. Run roofing felt up the wall about an inch higher than the wall side. Run the l shaped flashing up under the bottom row of siding so that it tucks under the final bottom row and on top of the wall and on top of the last row of bricks before you cap it with the cap.

Install roofing felt before starting step flashing. Flashing should be installed per international building code section 1405 3 flashing or consult your local building inspector for more stringent local codes. If your house has a roof line that extends past a corner of two walls make the first piece of step flashing a corner. Proper flashing is critical for any exterior wall assembly.
