Use a felt paper spline wrapped around the corner and extending 6 inches beyond the corner board to protect the joints where the siding meets the corner boards see figure 1 5 at left.

Flashing should be installed per international building code section 1405 3 flashing or consult your local building inspector for more stringent local codes.
If your house has a roof line that extends past a corner of two walls make the first piece of step flashing a corner.
